Through this retelling of a 1921 Georgia murder case, the history of peonage is revealed. Though slavery was illegal, the system of peonage in the Jim Crow South kept African Americans in bondage to a master, ostensibly to repay him for having paid their fines which had been imposed for minor criminal activity.
